Latest Interiors: Stunning restoration
The new homes for people who prefer old, from Mishon Mackay and Hamptons
The Courtyard at Stanmer Park is a unique project. The beautiful 18th century Grade I listed Stanmer House is a treasure, its gorgeous Palladian façade looking out over rolling acres of green parkland and surrounded by pretty woodland. Rescued and restored by local philanthropist Mike Holland the house and its lovely park are today much-loved by locals and visitors alike, who enjoy walking their dogs and visiting the beautiful tea rooms and gourmet restaurant.
The demolished North Wing, formerly a dilapidated service wing, is being replaced by seven new houses – but this is a very different concept to any run of the mill new development. The detail is exquisite; every architectural feature is carefully handmade to blend with the main house. From hand-cut and shaped slates and bespoke cast-iron gutters and downpipes to the hand-laid flint walls and hand-cut finials, this is construction of the finest old-school craftsmanship. There are an astounding 28 components to each dormer window.
“Mishon Mackay New Homes is delighted to represent The Courtyard,” says managing partner, Julie Frith. “It has a really historic ambiance, but the high quality specification is totally contemporary.”
The Courtyard is not an exercise in recreating history. This is comfortable 21st century living at its finest, backed by ten year NHBC warranty. The windows, for example, while redolent of the finest Georgian design, are in fact slimline double-glazed, and the electric heating system produces both high performance and low emissions, for greener, cleaner living. The internal ceilings are wonderfully high, over three metres, and the kitchen and bathrooms are sensuously contemporary.
Mike Holland of Cherrywood Investments and Derek Chapman
of Adenstar Construction are responsible for this amazing regeneration. “We want our buyers to feel they are coming home to their own country manor,” says Mike, “and we are intent on delivering the best of modern specification with the charm and sheer glamour of a stately home environment”.
With finishes including York paving and decorative dentilled cornicing, and a carefully restored ‘donkey house’ now reborn as a shady summer house, it is not surprising this project has been entered for a Conservation Award.
The showhome is open by appointment, and the first release prices start at £795,000 for a three bedroom house. For a brochure and an appointment to view the showhome, call Mishon Mackay New Homes 01273 829300 or Hamptons 01273 230230.
