The Courtyard at Stanmer Park is a unique project. The beautiful 18th century Grade I listed Stanmer House is a treasure, its gorgeous Palladian façade looking out over rolling acres of green parkland and surrounded by pretty woodland. Rescued and restored by local philanthropist Mike Holland the house and its lovely park are today much-loved by locals and visitors alike, who enjoy walking their dogs and visiting the beautiful tea rooms and gourmet restaurant.

The demolished North Wing, formerly a dilapidated service wing, is being replaced by seven new houses – but this is a very different concept to any run of the mill new development. The detail is exquisite; every architectural feature is carefully handmade to blend with the main house. From hand-cut and shaped slates and bespoke cast-iron gutters and downpipes to the hand-laid flint walls and hand-cut finials, this is construction of the finest old-school craftsmanship. There are an astounding 28 components to each dormer window.

With finishes including York paving and decorative dentilled cornicing, and a carefully restored ‘donkey house’ now reborn as a shady summer house, it is not surprising this project has been entered for a Conservation Award.
