Royalty at Brighton College
Pupils of Brighton College lined the path to the school’s new Diamond Jubilee Pavilion to welcome Prince Edward and Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, to Brighton on 4 July for the formal opening of the sports facility at the College’s New Ground, East Brighton Park. Some of the school’s youngest pupils, from its pre-prep school, joined members of college sports teams to wave Union Jacks and applaud the royal couple’s arrival. Accompanied by the Head Master, Mr Richard Cairns, Head of School (Head Prefect) Sasha Morse and the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, the Earl and Countess moved slowly up the welcoming line, stopping frequently to talk to pupils before heading inside the new sports pavilion. This was just part of the Royal couple’s whirlwind visit to Sussex which saw them visit the new Amex Stadium and Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne to name the Diamond Jubilee RNLI lifeboat.

Paddle Round The Pier 2012
Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July saw the Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival take place once again in Brighton. Whilst the rain had an obvious effect on attendance, organisers are delighted to have once again raised thousands of pounds for this year’s charities – the RNLI, Winston’s Wish and Surf Action.
Dave Samuel, event director said: “Thank you to everyone for venturing out in what were far from favourable conditions this year to attend the Paddle Round The Pier.“To have around 20,000 people attend an event in that weather was testament to the affection that the Paddle holds in people’s hearts.

Pedalling for pounds
Two Brighton women, Bettina and Anne, put their backs into it when they pedalled constantly for seven hours on New Road to raise money for Maternity Worldwide. The pair have organised a sponsored bike ride from Brighton to Paris in August and were raising money for it through stationary pedal power and a lot of stamina.
