Labour chooses party executive member to fight East Brighton by-election

Labour has chosen Chaun Wilson, a member of the party executive in Brighton and Hove, to stand in the East Brighton by-election next month.

She was chosen at a meeting this evening (Thursday 13 September) to fight the contest in what is widely regarded as a safe Labour seat.

She has worked in private and voluntary sector housing and has dealt with homelessness and is specifically interested in issues such as inequality, discrimination and poverty.

She described herself as passionate about LGBT issues and inequalities of youth and said that she liked community engagement and involvement.

She said: “It is a real privilege to be selected to stand in the forthcoming by-election and if elected I will represent the members of the city with dedication and great pride.

“I have a wealth of experience to bring to the council and have a particular interest in housing matters.”

The by-election was called after Labour councillor Craig Turton stood down from Brighton and Hove City Council for health reasons.

Polling day is on Thursday 18 October.

Councillor Gill Mitchell, leader of the opposition Labour group an East Brighton councillor, said: “I’m delighted that Chaun Wilson has been chosen as the Labour Party candidate for the East Brighton by-election.

“Chaun’s breadth of experience, particularly relating to housing and community issues, means that she will be a real champion for local residents.”
