One World Birth Day

Brighton businesses are supporting a global movement: One World Birth Day today (20 September 2012).

They are Birth “activists” based in Brighton and their experiences 4 years ago in our very own Royal Sussex has spurred them to produce films like REAL BIRTH STORIES and DOULA!, which have sold hundreds of copies worldwide.

On 20 September they have organised global premieres of their new film FREEDOM FOR BIRTH at 1,000 premieres around the world on the same day. There will be three premieres shown here in Brighton – including two showings of the film at the Eagle Pub in Gloucester Road, Brighton. The screening is totally free; the aim is to raise awareness about the plight of birth, in particular the imprisonment of a midwife in Hungary who has been arrested and kicked out of the midwifery community for delivering babies in womens’ homes which used to be illegal in Hungary. Hungary has now legalised home births but is still prosecuting Agnes Gareb the midwife. You can read some of the background to Agnes’ arrest here.
