Ian McCulloch

Although Ian McCulloch has a new solo album out, tonight’s stripped back, seated show was an unexpectedly nostalgic one. Mac and old pal Ian Broudie dug deep into the Echo & The Bunnymen songbook, leaning heavily on the band’s early material. When a primitive drum machine clonked into ‘Stars Are Stars’ and ‘Monkeys’, this felt like the closest we would get to experiencing those formative, post-punk Eric’s gigs. Mac was in fine voice and humour, while Broudie’s guitar talents easily filled Will Sergeant’s boots. Airing almost every classic, this show was truly greater than the sum of its parts.
