Lee Nelson

Any fears that comedy character Lee Nelson would be condescended to in one of Brighton’s more high-end venues were allayed by the broad working class audience here tonight. Nelson’s people skills carried the show, keeping the house lights up to interact with the crowd throughout. His gentle humiliation of selected punters was wickedly toe-curling, but tempered by similar mocking of himself and sidekick Omelette. The game show finale nearly fell flat, and some of the casual stereotyping, although not cruel, verged on lazy, but even Max Miller’s statue would have recognised this revival of end of the pier blue.
