Cinecity: Dreams Are Free

This heartfelt documentary about septuagenarian Scottish tenor sax player Bobby Wellins charted the ups, downs and rebirth of a jazz musician whose life story encompasses the history of modern jazz in Britain.

Amazing anecdotes of his first trip to New York in the 1950s covered hanging out and jamming with the likes of Lester Young and Zoot Sims, then returning home to begin an ongoing collaboration with pianist Stan Tracey that included the legendary ‘Under Milk Wood’ recording. Wellins spoke frankly of the years lost to heroin addiction and his comeback that was kick started right here in Kemp Town.
