Cinecity: Jukebox Fury: Zoom Lens
An evening of sound and vision dedicated to the work of author JG Ballard was laid out brilliantly: involving TVs, slides, films, letterboxes and toys screening clips of motorways, cars, buildings and gloomy people. Short film Crash! featuring Ballard himself talking about the significance of the automobile as a reflection of our bodies was gripping and poetic, such as his description of the “ungainly transit” of a woman exiting a car. John Foxx’s live tape loops and analog synth sounds were another highlight, invoking a beautiful sci-fi atmosphere. Who knew such industrial dystopian bleakness could create such a nice evening?
