Goodnight Mister Tom
This heartening production drew crowds of excited children into the theatre, even during half-term. The severe plot and adult themes may be challenging for under tens and the sentiment perhaps too sweet for some adults, but when played as well as this it all balances out beautifully. Endearing puppetry covers the swift scene changes and Sam the dog almost upstages the action. The magnificent Oliver Ford Davies excels as the crusty old man, all the while generously encouraging the very best from his young co-stars, Ewan Harris (William) and William Price (Zach), just as you’d expect from Mr Tom himself.
