Easter play returns to Brighton for a third year

The outdoor Easter play Passion of Christ returns to Brighton for the third time this weekend.

This year’s performance takes place on the lawn outside St Peter’s Church on York Place.

For the last two years the play has been held on Brighton seafront on Easter Sunday.

The Passion of Christ dramatises the days leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Passion plays were a traditional part of Lent celebrations in many European countries during the Middle Ages.

The word passion comes from the Latin passio, meaning suffering.

This year, the role of Christ is played by professional actor Matthew Howell.

All the other performers are volunteers from the local community.

The play is organised by Soul by the Sea, a Sussex-based Christian community arts organisation.

Ten per cent of the money raised by the event will be donated to Brighton poverty charity Off The Fence.

Passion of Christ takes place today (Friday 29 March), Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday at 2pm.
