Dragonette
Although the crowd was sparse for touring Canadian band Dragonette, it was at least enthusiastic for their particular brand of festive electro-pop. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to share in this mood. The music struck me as a little cheesey and somewhat overproduced, with multiple layers of sampled instruments, resulting in a sound that felt a bit too much like something you might hear at a young teens’ disco. Their performance would certainly benefit from being stripped down and played in a rawer way.
Amongst the songs on the setlist was the band’s 2010 hit ‘Hello’, which was greeted warmly by the crowd. Other than this, the best moment of the performance was a spoofed-up cover of the Cindy Lauper classic ‘Time After Time’, which was integrated into a different original song – ‘Pick Up The Phone’. Sadly, the rest of show was pretty forgettable, save the brilliant support performance from Scandi pop girl, Frida Sundemo.
