Marine Life: Brighton Marina’s Kirsty Pollard has fun in – and out – the water

The waterfront is definitely the place to be this summer. When the sun comes out and the kids have finished school, there is no better place than beside the seaside. Whether it’s being active and adventurous or simply chilling out, spending time in, on or by the water makes you feel a whole lot better.

If Brighton is the south coast’s brightest and best resort, then Brighton Marina is one of the best places in the city for you to make the most of the sea…

For starters, why not go fishing? You can fish from both breakwaters or hop on a fishing trip. Boats depart every two hours from 10am–6pm. These 90-minute mackerel trips are enormous fun for all the family, corporate entertaining or just a day out with friends, and start from only £20 per person. There are also some great panoramic pleasure boat trips available from the harbour. They last from 45 minutes upwards and are suitable for all ages. This is a great way to explore the city’s coastline, for less than £10, available with Ross Boat Trips. New to our waters is The Belle, a private hire party cruise ship catering for celebrations for you and up to 60 guests.

Lagoon Watersports run spectacular sunset champagne cruise where the views, the fun and the champagne make for a very special evening trip. Of course they offer a whole lot more, including powerboat hire and rides and rib and yacht courses for all ages. They have a quirky membership scheme: for £600 per year you can reserve and take out their boats with your mates… it’s like owning your own boat without all the costs.

Alternatively, for a real exploration of the city’s deep blue sea go diving, or take some lessons with The Brighton Dive Centre.

If you love watching the sea but prefer to stay on the land take a stroll along the breakwater. Make your way to the Boardwalk restaurants where you will be spoilt with spectacular views across the outer harbour. Relax and enjoy the free ping pong and chess tables set around the shops, bars and restaurants in Marina Square in the inner harbour.
