Six people treated in hospital after house fire in Portslade

Six people have been taken to hospital after a house fire in Portslade, one of them suffering from severe burns.

Fire crews were called out shortly after 4.20pm this afternoon (Friday 6 September) after a blaze started in the kitchen of a house in Hamilton Close.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent four fire engines from Hove and Preston Circus in Brighton.

They spent almost four hours at the scene and were due to return at 9pm to reinspect the two-storey end-of-terrace property.

South East Coast Ambulance Service sent three ambulances to the scene and took six people to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

One of the six, a man in his forties, suffered serious burns to his legs while the other five were treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

The fire service has started an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
