Two teenagers jailed after attacking four people in Brighton

Two teenagers have been jailed after a spree of robbery and violence in Brighton lasting 90 minutes.

Vinny Haworth, 18, of Lynchet Close, Brighton, was sent to a young offender institution for six and a half years.

Max Corbett, 19, of Albany Villas, Hove, was jailed for two years and three months.

The pair, both unemployed, initially denied the charges and were due to go on trial on Monday 12 August. They changed their pleas to guilty on Tuesday 6 August.

They were sentenced at Lewes Crown Court today (Friday 6 September).

The two teenagers rode a moped the wrong way down St James’s Street in Brighton in the early hours of Friday 26 October last year.

This led to a confrontation with a 36-year-old man from Brighton. He was attacked and suffered head injuries.

The man spent several months in a medically induced coma at Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath as a result of the attack.

The court was told that he suffered such serious injuries that he was not expected to recover fully.

Shortly afterwards, at about 12.45am, the teenagers went into a bar in Cranbourne Street, Brighton, and attacked the landlord when he refused to serve them.

At about 2am they robbed two men aged 20 and 21 in separate incidents near The Level in Brighton.

Both victims were left with cuts and bruises after the muggings in Washington Street. One had an iPhone stolen and the other a BlackBerry, cards and £20 cash although their possessions were later recovered.

A short while later the pair were arrested.

Corbett admitted robbery and assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH) in Washington Street and having the drug ketamine.

Haworth admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) in the St James’s Street attack and assaulting the pub landlord, causing him actual bodily harm.

He also pleaded guilty to one of the robberies in Washington Street and assaulting the victim, causing him actual bodily harm.

Detective Inspector Gordon Denslow, from Sussex Police, said after the case: “These two young men have been given sentences which reflect the seriousness of the offences that they have committed.

“They have both behaved totally irresponsibly, committing violent crimes indiscriminately without a single thought for their victims and the impact that their crimes would have upon them.

“This kind of behaviour should not and will not be tolerated and it is wholly appropriate that they have been brought to justice.”
