Brighton and Hove commuters face long train delays

Commuters from Brighton, Hove and Portslade are facing delays of up to an hour on the main line to London this morning (Monday 9 September).

Several services were cancelled after a man was hit by a train near East Croydon just before 5.30am.

No trains were going in or out of East Croydon, affecting Southern and First Capital Connect services.

Southern said: “Due to a person hit by a train just outside of East Croydon station, Southern services on all routes to and from London Victoria and London Bridge via East Croydon are subject to delay, alteration and short notice cancellation until further notice.

“Ticket acceptance is in place with Metrobus routes, Brighton and Hove Buses, South West Trains, SouthEastern, First Capital Connect, London Buses, London Underground and London Tramlink over any reasonable routes until further notice.”

First Capital Connect, which operates Thameslink, said: “A person has been hit by a train at East Croydon.

“Because of this, there are delays of up to 60 minutes through East Croydon. These delays will continue until further notice.”

The British Transport Police said: “BTP officers were called to the line close to East Croydon Station after a report a person had been struck by a train at 5.25am.

“Medics from the London Ambulance Service also attended but a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.

“The line was handed back to Network Rail at 6.36am.”

The man was hit by a London Victoria to Brighton train, the BTP said, adding that the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
