Bmusic

Are you creative, keen and want to make exciting music television?
When Latest TV goes live on air Bmusic will be driving the production of the music orientated programming to discover, promote, document and shout with pride about all that makes our corner of the world a diverse and celebrated musical hotbed.

February saw us launch our Youtube channel, youtube.com/thisisBmusic, with a pilot episode of ‘Noise Reel’, our entertainment/news and gossip show. Since this time we’ve had many features and many more shows hit our channel for our viewing pleasure. Bmusic need more eager and productive volunteers to help us with all aspects of professional programme creation, including but not limited to; interviewers, presenters, camera operatives, editors, video graphics and animation designers, researchers and sound technicians.

You might even have a great idea for a series of shows that Bmusic can help you develop and produce for future broadcast.

Previous experience isn’t necessary as what we value above all is initiative and enthusiasm, plus specific training on a variety of things can be arranged through Latest TV. This is the perfect time to get involved as we grow so please come and join us to find out more at one of our team meetings happening fortnightly.

We are holding our next open meetings at The Sovereign, on Tuesday 17 September and Tuesday 1 October. We hope to see you there. With thanks, The Bmusic Team.

Sade Ali loves her girl lollipop! and celebrates its return

Lollipop! Probably one of the greatest nights ever to bless the streets of Brighton. Lollipop was crowned the longest running R’n’B night in Brighton, EVER! Unfortunately Lollipop finished late last year as The Honey Club closed down and re-opened as Shooshh! Well, last week I received the best news I have heard in a long time, Lollipop is back! And it is back to stay.

With a new residence it starts at LIFE from this Friday. I can guarantee I am going to be there every Friday from now on. Lollipop has a sense of home to me and will always be my number one favourite night in Brighton. As far as the DJs go, Larizzle, Dubl and TooCold are back and they will be going head to head in two rooms playing R’n’B, Bashment, Afrobeats and even a bit of reggae and funky! Lollipop is a place where you can feel free to dance, act and be whatever you like! Every culture comes together and makes one big family celebrating the music we love. The only thing that will be different to the old Lollipop is that two promotion teams are teaming up and making it bigger. The concept of the new night is called FLIP. Which means – when you pay for anything such as a drink or entry you will go head to head with the staff in a game of flip the coin. If you win you receive a discount if you lose you pay standard price. So, I’m going to put my luck to the test and see if I can save some dollar on the night.

I can reveal which clubs you need to check out during Fresher’s, these are my chosen spots for the semester…
Tuesdays – Coalition
Wednesdays – The Haunt
Thursdays – Bastard Pop @ Audio
Fridays – Lollipop @ LIFE
Next week I will be searching for the best Indie and Rock Nights in Brighton. Tweet me your faves!

Brighton Noise

Alastair Reid on this week’s best gigs
A couple of new releases to shout about this week, and the smart money is on TRAAMS to take the next step up from local heroes to national darlings. New album Grin came out yesterday (Mon 16 September) on Brighton’s Fat Cat Records, mixing hypnotic, seven-minute krautrock excursions with the bitter pop and snap of their shorter numbers. Playing this week too.

Elsewhere, dream pop trio Dog In The Snow released a delicious new single, ‘Fire In The Sky’. Produced by Steve Hillier, who has worked with Keane, Dubstar and, apparently, Gary Numan. It’s a minimal exercise with just piano, fuzz and a beat to support Helen Ganya Brown’s stirring vocal performance. And not a mention of cars anywhere. If you like Zola Jesus and Us Baby Bear Bones then you’re in for a treat, if you don’t know any of these artists then get a-googling, friends, because you are missing out.

Dog In The Snow represent a curious phenomenon among contemporary Brighton bands in really wanting to put something in something else. Aside from Dog In The Snow’s double-whammy, there’s post-rock Explosions In The Sky wannabes Fox In The City, metal monsters Hole In The Sky, and titular tearaways Toad In The Whole. Just kidding, they’re not a real band. Should be though. Written In Waters get a bye on merit, and there are doubtless many more, but it’s still a curious occurrence that makes me wonder whether instilling a sense of belonging in their artistic output makes up for its transience in real life.

The life of a modern musician is inherently uncertain; life consists of holding down temp jobs between fleeting tours spent on sofas, shared mattresses or motorways. Even for successful bands, the only constant is the practice room or the stage and even those four walls that reflect the music change by the day, making every rendition different from the last. So the only thing that never changes is the idea that exists in the musician’s head, and what is a band name but just an idea? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

Right, shows for the week. Sound architect (yes, really) Tim Hecker is taking over St Mary’s Church on Wednesday, Broker support Yards at Sticky Mike’s on Thursday, Source’s New Music Special is at the Dome on Friday, and the aforementioned TRAAMS do an in-store at Resident on Monday. Go get ’em.
