Using the simple handclap to set the pace throughout, the Tuareg musicians blended Celtic, Jamaican, Indian and African styles to create a performance of truly global music. Frontman Ousmane appeared laid back but his powerful guitar-style was clearly influenced by 60s British blues rock and this, alongside the astonishing female vocals and furious rhythm section, created an hypnotic sound that crept up on you. A translator helped to describe the plight of the Malian people of the Sahara before they continued whipping up the crowd into an entranced dance frenzy, that climaxed in a thrilling drums versus bass battle.
