Orchestra Buena Vista

Septuagenarians can rock it out. The Stones proved it this summer and the celebrated Los Superbuelos – the Super Grandfathers – of Buena Vista Social Club fame, fielding many older than this decade in their number, are just as spectacularly energised. A packed Dome, swaying couples double stepping down the aisles from the off, resembled a humid carnival in Havana rather than a
windswept Wednesday night in Sussex. As the evening built, the tempo gradually rising with the soloing more frenetic and congas insistent, the big hits – when they came – ‘Chan Chan’, ‘Candela’, ‘De Camino A La Verada’ amongst many – provided the crescendo to this fiesta. The lights finally came up and the Dome was able to take a well-earned sit down.
