London Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Roll (piano), Andrés Orozco-Estrada (conductor)

The Dome was full, anticipating an exciting programme, and we were not disappointed. Orozco-Estrada delighted us with his spirited delivery of Kodály’s Dances of Galánta. It was a perfect start to this programme, beginning gently and ending in a thrilling fury.

These contrasts were kept up in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Michael Roll seemed to dare the orchestra to keep up with him, and astonishingly they did, yet his lyrical moments too were sublime.

Dvořák’s 7th Symphony, so redolent of academic Brahms and rich with lilting Czech melodies, also built to a spectacular climax. Maestro Orozco-Estrada, please come again.
