Consultation begins on creation of new Brighton parking zone

Letters are being sent to people in four streets in Brighton asking whether they want to be part of a week-day residents parking zone.

Brighton and Hove City Council is writing to people living in Maldon Road, Matlock Road, Tivoli Crescent North and Tivoli Road about its revised proposals.

Anyone else who wants to comment on the proposal will be able to respond online in just over a week’s time – from Monday 13 January until Tuesday 4 February.

The council had originally proposed bringing in resident parking seven days a week.

It said that the scheme was amended after feedback from local residents suggested that the parking problems were related to commuters using Preston Park Station.

The council said that it carried out a consultation in the autumn because of concerns from residents about parking problems in the area.

It said: “The results were an exact 50-50 split. Of 182 responses, 91 wanted a scheme – an extension of the existing Area A parking scheme which already operates south of Preston Park station – and 91 were against.

“While views were split, the most frequent comment – expressed both by those both in favour and against – was that current parking problems are caused by commuters during the week and there are no problems at weekends.

“As a result a new ‘standalone’ Monday to Friday scheme is being proposed for the area which would be known as Area E residents parking scheme.”

Councillor Pete West, the chairman of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “We have listened to what people told us during the consultation and adapted our proposals as a result.

“We want to find the right balance for residents, businesses and visitors as well as to keep traffic moving safely.”

The council added: “Comments made in this latest stage of consultation will be reported back to a future meeting of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee.”
