Busy Brighton road closed after pensioner hit by lorry

A busy road in the centre of Brighton has been closed in both directions after a pensioner was knocked down by a lorry.

The 89-year-old pedestrian was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Kemp Town after the collision which happened at about 4.20pm this afternoon (Wednesday 22 January).

Accident West Street Brighton 20140122The pensioner suffered a serious leg injury in the accident. It happened in West Street in Brighton between the corner of Grenville Street, leading to the entrance to the Churchill Square car park, and Duke Street.

Sussex Police said that the driver of the lorry was not hurt.

Officers were investigating the incident and did not indicate whether the driver or pedestrian was at fault.

The lorry belongs to the logistics and distribution company Gist, which includes Marks and Spencer and Starbucks among its customers.
