Worthing Symphony Orchestra, Poom Prommachart (piano)

London-based, Thai-born Poom Prommachart, winner of last year’s Sussex International Piano Competition, returned triumphantly with Chopin’s Piano Concerto No1. It’s a young man’s work. Chopin composed it when he was just 19, the same age as Poom, whose interpretation was full of virtuoso vigour and charm. His lightness in the passagework and a bold daring with some of the tempos was exhilarating.

The well-balanced programme included Mozart’s Overture to ‘Cosi fan tutte’, Two Elegiac Melodies by Grieg and Symphony No.4 ‘Tragic’ by Schubert, who was also only 19. This orchestra always delivers a very enjoyable concert, the perfect Sunday afternoon!
