Howard Brenton’s Eternal Love at Theatre Royal
True romance
English Touring Theatre, which is celebrating its 21st birthday throughout 2014, and the Globe Theatre on Tour have revived the critically acclaimed production of Howard Brenton’s Eternal Love. The play visits Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 April.
Eternal Love is an epic story of love between passionate people tested by the times in which they live and those around them. At first the affair between teacher Abelard and brilliant student Heloise is full of lust, but soon transforms into an enduring love. As Abelard’s contentious views of the church lead to tragic consequences, Heloise defies expectations and bears his child out of wedlock.
With live music, a cast of 18, dynamic contemporary language and a stunning setting, the story of Abelard and Heloise bursts on to the stage. History is brought to life amid moments of highly entertaining fiery philosophical debate.
Eight actors in the production, including the two leads, previously performed together in the highly successful 2012 UK tour of English Touring Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe’s co-production of Anne Boleyn, which was named Best Touring Production at Theatre Awards UK in 2012.
This production of Eternal Love marks the inaugural tour of the National Touring Group (NTG), a consortium of eight major venues across the UK which aims to bring high quality and ambitious theatre to areas of the country that fundamentally rely on touring for their arts provision.
Eternal Love, Theatre Royal Brighton, Tuesday 1–Saturday 5 April 2014.
