Hundreds march as schools across Brighton and Hove shut due to teachers’ strike
Schools across Brighton and Hove closed as teachers took part in a national strike today (March 26).
The protest was part of an ongoing national campaign against changes to working conditions, pensions and pay.
With only one state-controlled school in the city not affected, parents had to take a day off to ensure their children were looked after.
But those picking up placards said they had no regrets about going on strike.
About 1,000 people – including a group of Govebusters – took part in a rally at the Brighthelm Centre in North Road, Brighton.
Many of those who took part marched there from three meeting points – Hove Town Hall, Blakers Park and Saunders Park.
Other teachers handed out leaflets at Brighton Station explaining why they were on strike.
And some set up a picket line at BHASVIC in Dyke Road.
Phil Clarke, of Lewes, Eastbourne and Wealden NUT, said: “Parents should direct their understandable frustration at the disruption our strike causes directly at the government.
“By attacking teachers rather than supporting them, the government risks the long-term future of quality education in this country.”
