A band from Lewes has set up a donations page after their musical equipment was lost in a fire at Phoenix Theatre and Studio warehouse in the town.

About 70 firefighters were called to Phoenix Industrial Estate from across East Sussex shortly after 6pm on Saturday evening.

Scott Free were about to play in the venue when the fire started, but didn’t have time to move their equipment from the burning wreckage.

All five band members managed to escape without injury.

Hugo Bowman, drummer of Scott Free, told Latest: “We were all in shock and awe, amazed at how quickly the building went up in flames.

“We have set up a donations page on our website to raise money towards getting us back on our feet and gigging again.”

He also said that an estimated £3,500 worth of equipment, minimum, was lost in the blaze, including their beloved drum kit and sound gear.

“In sentimental value, we have lost a lot more. We have to start our careers all over again,” Bowman added.

The band’s website says: “We’re all a bit shaken still after having to evacuate and leave all our personal belongings, drum kit, cymbals, guitar amp, pedal board, bass amp and even Jamie’s bass inside.”

The fire’s cause is still unknown and there are fears about asbestos in the roof contaminating the area.

The band added that filing insurance will take months and is uncertain, but the donations will help the band get back on their ten feet in the meantime.
