Brighton’s Royal Pavilion hosts country’s first same-sex marriage

History was made as Brighton’s Royal Pavilion hosted the country’s first ever same-sex marriage.

At just after midnight on Friday March 28 Andrew Wale and Neil Allard tied the knot in the music room of the regal palace.

Media from across the globe – as well as our city’s very own Latest TV – covered the special day, which was made possible in England and Wales after a change in the law thanks to years of campaigning.

The couple, who live in the city and have been together for seven years, received a standing ovation when the marriage was confirmed.

They were the first of five couples to marry in the city on the first day the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into effect.
