Sussex beat Brighton in Varsity 2014

Sussex beat Brighton comprehensively 12.5 to 6.5 in the annual Varsity completion between the two universities. Brighton had home advantage this year as the sporting extravaganza took place at their Falmer Campus.

Every year Varsity falls just before the Easter break as University of Brighton take on University of Sussex in a one-day sporting spectacular. The two unis go head-to-head in a range of events including Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, Football, and many more.

You can be forgiven for looking at the final score and wondering ‘how do you get half a point?’ Well, teams are awarded half a point in the event of a draw, so as the men’s football match finished 0-0 that explains the outcome.

Brighton’s Panthers have enjoyed bragging rights for the last twelve months but now they’ve had to hand the crown of superiority over to Sussex. Aside from the intensity varsity brings, both teams see the benefits of the competition. Panthers Ladies’ Tennis captain Danielle West says it has great benefits for the academic communities. She told Latest Sport: “It brings everyone from the universities together, those who don’t play sport can enjoy by viewing and feel they can participate.”

The University of Sussex’s Football Ambassador Megan Franklin sees varsity as a celebration of expression and opportunity. “We take our day about having fun and making sure that the old girls get a chance to play.”

So varsity is over until next year, in the meantime Brighton students will have to endure taunts from their closest rivals, but its all good fun really. I wonder whether the staff at Oceana would agree?
