Hundreds turn out for Brighton domestic violence charity fundraiser

Hundreds of people turned out for a charity fundraising event for the Brighton domestic violence charity Rise.

The event, called End Of, was held at Hove Town Hall and raised more than £15,000.

The performances included a poem read by the newspaper columnist Suzanne Moore, a song by Rose Collis and a reading by Tracey Thorn from her book Disco Queen, which included her Ode to Julie Burchill.

The singer Alison Moyet, who moved to Brighton last year and is pictured above, performed a set which included her first two singles with Yazoo – Only You and Don’t Go.

She was followed by another newspaper columnist Caitlin Moran who read what she called her two greatest hits.

The audience heard a moving personal thank you from a victim of domestic abuse who was helped by Rise – and a reading of the story of another.

The sponsors included Sussex Style magazine, Julia Claxton Photography, the Treatment Rooms, the Grand Hotel, Moshimo, Terre à Terre and Misty’s Wine Bar.

Thanks were also said to Julie Burchill – another journalist, with her home in Brighton – for inspiring the event.
