Hundreds take part in Stonewall’s Equality Walk through Brighton
More than 700 people hit the streets of Brighton for Stonewall’s equality walk – which has so far raised more than £65,000 to tackle homophobic abuse.
BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Adele Roberts and Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite started the event after those taking part had gathered for a picnic in Pavilion Gardens.
The 10km walk, the 11th in the charity’s 25-year history, was supported by American Express, with 25 employees from the Brighton-based firm taking part in the event.
In the run up to this year’s walk, the company worked with some of the city’s local businesses to create special offers along the route.
Mike Whyte, American Express’ vice president of merchant services, said: “It was great to see so many people from across the Sussex community taking part, including American Express employees, their family members and friends.
“At American Express we encourage people from all backgrounds, talents and perspectives to thrive and we are proud to be supporting the invaluable work Stonewall undertakes.”
So far £65,000 has been raised and the charity hopes this can rise above it’s £75,000 target in the coming days.
The money will go towards holding a number of educational events in schools across the country.
