Stage: Starless and bible-black

Owen Teale stars in the 60th anniversary Clwyd Theatr Cymru production of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood

It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters’-and-rabbits’ wood limping invisible down to thesloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea.

The opening words from Dylan Thomas’ iconic radio play; words that invited you to Llareggub, a small Welsh town by the sea. Here you meet blind Captain Cat, Mog Edwards and his sweetheart Miss Price, Sinbad Sailor, Dai Bread, Polly Garter, Nogood Boyo and Lord Cut Glass. Walk along Coronation Street, Cockle Row and Donkey Street, down to the little fishing harbour and back to Milk Wood. Dylan Thomas explores their lives, hopes and thoughts in the dreams of a night and the rhythm of a day.

Actor Owen Teale stars in director Terry Hands’ new production of Under Milk Wood, which visits Theatre Royal Brighton this summer. The production marks the centenary of Dylan Thomas’ birth, as well as the 60th anniversary since Under Milk Wood was first produced in Britain as a radio play by the BBC, in 1954. A cast of Welsh actors also includes Torchwood actor Kai Owen and Steven Meo (The Fabulous Baker Boys).

Owen Teale won the Best Actor Tony Award for his performance in A Doll’s House on Broadway, and recently starred alongside Zoë Wanamaker in Passion Play by Peter Nichols. Other theatre credits include A Doll’s House (West End/Broadway), Creditors (Donmar), Ivanhov (National Theatre), Dance of Death (West End) and Mary Stuart and Macbeth (Theatre Clwyd).

For television, Owen stars as series regular Ser Alliser in the HBO TV adaptation of Game of Thrones. Other credits include Stella (SKY 1), Ballykissangel (BBC), Torchwood (BBC) and Murphy’s Law (ITV).

Terry Hands is an award-winning British stage director and producer, who founded the Liverpool Everyman Theatre in 1964. He became joint Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company with Trevor Nunn in 1978, and Chief Executive in 1986. In 1997 he became director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru.

He has won numerous awards and accolades including the 1983 Laurence Olivier, and the London Critics Circle Theatre Awards for Best Director for Cyrano de Bergerac. Under Milk Wood is a Clwyd Theatr Cymru production presented on tour by Karl Sydow, Roger Chapman and CAPA.
