Brighton and Hove firefighters to strike next week

Firefighters in Brighton and Hove are expected to take part in a 24-hour strike next week.

The strike on Thursday (12 June) is part of a national dispute between the government and the Fire Brigades Union over pensions.

Just over a week later, on Saturday 21 June, a further strike will take place for seven hours.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “Non-FBU members and officers will respond to life-threatening emergencies during the strikes.”

Chief Fire Officer Des Prichard said: “In previous strikes, we have been able to prioritise life-threatening incidents and deal effectively with the emergency situations we’ve been called to.

“We will continue to do this and so ask the public to make sure they do their bit.

“We won’t have as many crews available as usual and so cover will be reduced.

“Our advice remains the same – if you do have a fire, get out, stay out and dial 999.”
