Stage: New Venture Theatre

After their own huge success in Brighton Fringe 2014 and multiple sell-out shows, New Venture Theatre is announcing a limited second run of Hedwig And The Angry Inch as part of Brighton Pride 2014.

“It’s hard to think of a show that better embodies the values of acceptance, tolerance, love, and lust for life that make up the Pride movement. Hedwig has it all,” said director Frank Leon. The show’s Fringe review described it emphatically as “highly recommended”.

Internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig Schmidt is an East German rock ’n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation. Backed by hard-rocking band The Angry Inch on their East Sussex Tour, Hedwig tells us of her life’s search for “the origin of love” and the people who have made her the woman she is today.

Sugar daddies, punk idols, downtrodden Eastern European drag queens and the soulmate who stole her songs to achieve rock star fame, all put in an appearance. It’s a rocking ride; funny, touching and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt that life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Brighton Pride is a Community Interest Company (CIC) promoting equality and diversity, and advances education to eliminate discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

New Venture Theatre is a charity theatre based in Brighton and run entirely by volunteers; it has won several local awards over the years. The NVT was founded more than 50 years ago to provide education and experience to anyone wanting to get involved in theatre, and to bring affordable performing arts to the local community.

Latest magazine’s reviewers gave the show an emphatic four stars and described it as “a captivating, funny and excellently executed show … a unique revival that felt fresh and truly exciting.”

“Hedwig’s search for ‘the origin of love’ is obviously a tumultuous one, but with this outstanding
cast of actors and exceptional live band you’ll want to follow her to the finish,” said BroadwayBaby. Be sure to catch this unique theatre experience on its limited second run.

New Venture Theatre’s second amateur production of Hedwig
And The Angry Inch runs from
