Latest Style: Rhatia Renée’s style shoot & interview with Callecia J Brown

Design details

What is it like to be a fashion designer? The very talented Callecia J Brown tells us what it’s like to have the world’s coolest job (besides fashion photographer of course) while showing off her new fashion line.

How did you get into design?
My grandmother is a dressmaker in Jamaica and she used to make all the school uniforms for our little district. I used to help her by sewing on the buttons, cutting off the stray threads and sometimes a little bit of hand sewing. So I grew up around clothes being made, but I had no idea about fashion until I came to this country and I bought
my first copy of Vogue.

What was the first thing you ever made?
The first thing I ever made was a dress for a doll. My grandmother was so proud that she showed anyone who was interested!

How long have you been a clothing designer?
I would say that I have been a designer since I was 12 years old. However, I have been working professionally since 2007.

What was your biggest influence in becoming a designer?
I would say that Valentino was my inspiration along with House Of Elliot. That TV show, and my grandmother of course.
What are your inspirations?
I love finding little unusual details, mainly from history books or old films, and putting
it all together to create something modern and timeless.

How would you describe your style?
My style is the Callecia J Brown style. My clothes are for a woman who loves fashion and is not slavish to trends.
She is strong and full of character. I don’t have a word to describe my style and I prefer not to so the wearer can decide.

What is the best part about being a designer?
I like developing ideas, exploring fabrics and different shapes. Basically I love creating and exploring ways of flattering the female form. That is what I believe clothes should do. And of course I never have the same outfit as anyone else.

What is the most challenging part of being a designer today?
I am an independent designer so I never quite know when I will be paid next. That’s the most challenging part! Also, dealing with people can be challenging.

Any advice to aspiring fashion designers out there?
I would just say be persistent and never let anyone tell you what it is to be a fashion designer.

I had university lecturers tell me ‘that’s not going to work’ or try to steer me in a direction I didn’t want to go. Just have faith in your creativity, and never give up!
