Events: Brighton Pride

A Brighton institution of parties, and liberty – it’s that time of year to find your rainbow once again

Whether it’s as a political statement, a celebration of liberation, or whatever else you personally take from Brighton Pride, this weekend’s events are a landmark on our city’s calendar.

The march and party in the park take place on Saturday 2 August, and with such names as Paloma Faith, MKS, Mz Dynamite, Katy B, Sam Bailey and Alison Moyet on the main stage – as well as tempting treats and acts in the Legends Cabaret tent, the Wild Fruit dance tent, the Calabash tent and the Q stage, it’s an incredible bargain at just £20 a ticket. It’s because of the community spirit that the ticket price has remained at the very affordable end of festival ticket prices, and this spirit can be found very much in evidence in the Community Village and Market area, offering up stalls representing charities and organisations with both a local and a national flavour to promote their LGBT work, issues and charitable aims.

With fewer big names but more familiar faces, picking up the party post-Preston Park is the Pride Village Party. Kicking off at 6pm and with entertainment starting at 8pm, this party takes over a large part of Marine Parade. With entertainment zones dedicated to cabaret, bears and disco, you can take your pick and see where your dancing shoes take you.
Festivities continue in the street on Sunday too, with events and entertainment starting at 2pm. Admittance is arranged via Pledge bands costing just £5 for a two-day pass or £2 for a single day pass. Even the most cash-strapped can join in with the festivities.

Pledge bands are required to purchase alcohol in venues and outlets on Saturday 2 August from 4pm – 12.30pm, and Sunday 3rd August from 2pm – 8pm.

Of course, there are countless smaller events happening around the city, not least the individual viewings and exhibitions involved with Pride Arts & Film Festival. Keep your eyes peeled for adventures, illuminations and educational treats – and of course check out the website for details.
