Bored Gamers: Apples Vs Oranges
Last week, in a brand new segment of our show Bored Gamers, we introduced Apples Vs Oranges as we compared card and video games of the same intellectual property. The property in question this particular week was The Walking Dead. Now, with fear of being ostracised by the comic book readers out there, I admit, sheepishly, that I have not read the original source material. I am an ardent fan of the TV series, however, and it is on that I shall be concentrating this week.
I could wax lyrical till the cows came home about the series many positive points, but this would fill up far more than my allotted allowance of words, and wouldn’t necessarily make for great reading. Instead I feel obliged at my current place in series four to point out a persistent niggle that seems to have burrowed far more under my skin than I would have considered possible. Still first things first: SLIGHT SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT! With the important notices attended to I will ramp up to my current peeve, but first an appetiser. The word zombie seems to not exist in this otherwise identical alternate universe. After the umpteenth time of hearing them referred to as biters/walkers/lurkers, you wish at least one character – no matter how inconsequential and likely to die that episode – will call them what they clearly are! Still, this is at least a conscious decision of the script writers and show runners, and can be forgiven. What is less forgiveable is the glaring mistake that has frustrated me on the series I am currently watching. With it announced in the second series that we all carry the zombie disease and even away from bites and scratches will ‘turn’ upon death, the great threat for half of the fourth season is a flu breakout! Thrilling stuff, it is a roller-coaster ride to keep the main protagonists alive, but fear not, some of the healthy are on a dangerous supply run to pick up antibiotics!
At this point I want to punch the TV and have genuinely questioned out loud, which show-running numpty thought that antibiotics (for infections) would have any effect on a flu virus! With the human body exponentially becoming more resistance to too commonly taken antibiotics, such glaring televised mistakes only work to compound the problem! They could have simply meant antivirals, but with at least a few mentions of the words antibiotics, I stand firmly peeved. So with the winter and nasty bug season looming, please take medical advice from non-zombie related sources. Thanks for bearing with my rant, I’m now off to finish my paper on how the cure of Ebola lies with homeopathy!
Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming.
