Film: Stories from the city

Being the ‘film girl’ of LatestTV – working on a film review show, a televised film festival and the film news – means that occasionally the different programmes I create cross over in wonderful ways.

In this week’s PostFeature one of the films we will be reviewing comes from Jamie Patterson of Jump Start Productions, whose work we will soon be showing as part of FilmFest. Jamie is a very young filmmaker who established Jump Start Productions in 2009 to make “innovative independent feature films that promote the essence of their origins in the city of Brighton”. The studio has put out films of varying lengths before, but with their latest they are set to shoot out into the public consciousness!

Home For Christmas, released this week, tells the tale of Beth Prince, who has always loved fairy tales and now finally feels as if she is in one of her own. With her dream job in a charming independent cinema (hello, Duke of York’s!), a handsome boyfriend and living by the sea, surely nothing could possibly need improving?

Except yes, obviously it does, or else this wouldn’t be a very good film. Beth’s problem is that no man has ever told her they love her and she is so desperate to hear those three little words she decides to take matters into her own hands … and promptly wishes she hadn’t. More pressure is piled upon poor Beth’s shoulders when the regional director of a multiplex cinema determines he will get his hands on their lovely little cinema.

The film stars Brightonian Lucy Griffiths, who played Nora in True Blood, Derren Nesbitt, who you may remember from Where Eagles Dare (1968) and Flawless (2007), and April Pearson, of Skins fame, in the lead role. The film is based on the well-reviewed novel of the same name from Cally Taylor. Granted, I am a little dubious about a plot based on a woman feeling unfulfilled until she has confirmation of a man’s affection … but a fight to stop the ‘big name’ taking over the ‘little guy’ cinema is certainly something we can all get behind!

It’s a film I can’t wait to see for many reasons, so do tune in to PostFeature on Wednesday at 6.30pm (or check the schedule for repeats if you have missed it) to see what I think. Do also keep your eyes peeled for more from Jump Start Productions on FilmFest.

If you too have a short film crying out for a wider audience, then make sure to email me – jessica@thelatest.tv – to see what we can do about getting it on television, and getting you the recognition you deserve. Spread the word, tell your friends and get in touch.

Lastly, do remember that CINECITY is still on and there are still tickets to wonderful things. Log on to the CINECITY website now!
