GREEN DREAM
Some great news for all city residents. That’s because a £4 million pound bid to transform Stanmer Park has been given the go ahead.

The money from Heritage Lottery will be used to protect the environment and revamp its Grade Two listed buildings. But not everyone is happy – with existing tenants claiming they face increases in rents for poorly maintained properties.

Let’s hope in the bid to look to the future, the present is not forgotten.

CITY OF GIVING
Brighton and Hove has been hailed a city of volunteers. Third sector leaders made the claim after a new report showed volunteering in the city had increased by more than half in the last four years.
It also highlights that the third sector contributes about £127 million to the local economy. So what makes our city so giving?

Why not watch our report at www.thelatest.tv to find out.

STREET LIGHTING
Cuts to town hall funding means that many authorities are cutting back on street lighting.

In a national league table drawn up recently, both East and West Sussex are ranked among the top areas for switching off. But in Brighton and Hove, council bosses have gone the other way. They claim spending millions on fitting eco-friendly lighting will save the council more in the long run – that’s not to mention protecting the environment.

Latest TV’s James Dunham went to find out more about this bright idea …

WHEELS OFF
If you’ve taken a walk by the sea recently, you’ll have noticed the Brighton Wheel looking a little bit sorry for itself. Workers have removed all the pods from the wheel, ready for general maintenance.

The popular seaside attraction is taking the rest of the month off, to recharge its batteries. But workers have assured Latest TV it will be spinning once again next month.

WATCH YOUR STEP
Sticking with the roads – cracked pavements are causing great ire out in west Hove. For those of you who havn’t been out to Richardson Road, you’re missing out – it’s a little oasis of independent traders just off New Church Road.

But shoppers and traders are upset, as lorries mounting the kerbs are damaging the walkway.

In recent weeks three people have reported injuries after tripping.
This has prompted local councillor Graham Cox to call for action.

NORTH STREET SAFE?
Last week saw a nasty accident involving two pedestrians and a bus in North Street, Brighton.

The road is perhaps the city’s busiest – with thousands of pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis passing along it every hour.

Recently it was announced that thousands would be spent sprucing up the pavement area.
But after this latest incident, would this money have been better spent on road safety?

WE WILL REMEMBER
He became a national hero after running away from his Hove care home to return to the beaches of Normandy. But now, D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan has died.

Current city mayor Brian Fitch told us that he believes people can learn a lot from the way the 90-year-old refused to give in when he was told he could not go to the 70th anniversary commemorations. And I’m inclined to agree. The city has lost one of its finest role models.

WHEELS AWAY
Worthing is gearing up for a two-day speed cycling extravaganza.

You may not have heard of it before but Street Velodrome is dubbed the hottest new craze on two wheels. And the seaside town had been chosen to host a leg of the national cycling event which involves a pop-up racetrack.

With television cameras (not just Latest TV’s) expected, this is yet another boost to a town on the up.
