Brighton’s Arty: It takes two

I met the Dane at work. And it was always inevitable that the partnership of an editor with an art director would give birth to our own publishing enterprise – albeit in our spare time. Now you might expect that two creative types living and working together would be the recipe for tantrums and tiffs. But it’s all pretty harmonious, chez Krog … well, as long as I get my own way and Torben keeps his Scandi mitts – and grammar – off the Arty Twitter feed.

So we’re always interested to see the results of other creative couplings. And in this year’s book – Brighton’s Artists 2015 – we’re thrilled to be featuring again the paintings of Jo Watters-Pawlowski and for the first time Kris Pawlowski’s captivating photography.

The underlying force behind Jo’s paintings is ‘abstract expressionism’ as she plays with the figurative elements of landscapes and seascapes to create an emotional, abstract response. Her aim is to evoke a reaction, rather than depict a scene, with each artwork carefully built up layer by layer using oil, acrylics and resist-work techniques that lend a spectacular intensity to the end results. In contrast – and firmly rooted in reality – Kris has a passion for photographing artists, craftsmen and musicians. His style is simple, as he aims to capture his subjects in a relaxed and informal way. Both utterly brilliant in their own unique ways!

Out of town: Pelham House Hotel is holding its first Open Art Exhibition, with all works chosen by the staff at the hotel. More than 90 submissions were received from artists from Lewes and surrounding areas, and the final selection includes a wonderfully high standard of various styles and mediums, including prints, oils, acrylics, photographic prints, collage and mixed media. A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Rocking Horse Appeal. The exhibition runs until 24 February.
