Buses: Get on Board

Brighton & Hove buses share their top bus route destinations …

You may not realise it, but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton and Hove bus network, stretching out to our bounteous surrounding countryside – Eastbourne, the South Downs and Steyning, to name but a few.

This week: Tunbridge Wells! You can travel on Regency Route 29 to Tunbridge Wells and sample its marvellous architecture, sophisticated shops, superb restaurants, fascinating antique shops and cosy cafés. Why not ride on the coat-tails of the spring sunshine and treat yourself to a purchase or two?
The town is also home to the main station and headquarters of the Spa Valley Railway. Along with the souvenir shop tucked within the engine shed, you can also see historic locomotives and carriages undergoing restoration, and a model railway. And right next to that you’ll find The Pantiles – the famous colonnaded walkway, once the central meeting place for visiting gentry. After you’ve finished shopping you can stroll down to the Chalybeate Spring and sample the reputed ‘health-giving’ waters.

Tunbridge Wells Museum houses one of the most impressive collections of Tunbridge ware (locally made marquetry) in the world, and exhibitions in the nearby Art Gallery change regularly. Entry to the Museum and Art Gallery next
to the Town Hall is free, too, so no excuses – be sure to take a peep inside!
The Regency villas, Victorian houses and white-painted ‘clapboard’ cottages of Tunbridge Wells create a feeling of light and space in the town, and The Common near The Pantiles and Calverley Grounds near the Great Hall are pleasant green spaces in which to take the air. The latter also has a popular pavilion-style café.
Getting there: Take Regency Route 29, 29B or 29X (their frequency is up to every 10 minutes). Full timetable available at buses.co.uk/29. The route starts at Stop G, Churchill Square, travels along Lewes Road and onwards to Tunbridge Wells, dropping you off in the centre of the town.
