Talisker Atlantic Challenge; A Taste of Italy Night; brickwork demo at Sussex Downs College

Brighton man needs local heroes

A fearsome Brightonian has signed up to the greatest challenge of his life and needs local heroes to come on board.
Nick McCulloch, 39, will be taking part in this year’s Talisker Atlantic Challenge – a race to row the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. Along with his co-rower Tom Parker, 28, the transatlantic adventurers hope to raise £1million for three outstanding charities. Sussex Beacon will use the funds to help educate school children about HIV and support their campaign to fight the stigma of the virus. They are also helping Barnardo’s to combat child exploitation and aid support workers in protecting children from abuse and manipulation. Finally, the team are supporting Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal to enrich and enhance the quality of life for children.

A world first in ocean rowing, the team are broadcasting live 24/7 and online spectators will be able to track every one of their 1,000,000 strokes during their journey. This gives supporters the unique opportunity to follow Nick and Tom live with every push and pull as they burn over 20,000 calories a day during their gruelling three months at sea.
To get them to the start line they are in search of heroes. For just a £20 donation people can submit selfies that will appear on the boat and will travel across the ocean with them as an Atlantic Tempest Hero. Local businesses can also get involved; for just £1,000 they can become part of a limited and exclusive club and align themselves with the thrill and adventure of the Atlantic Tempest challenge as a Local Business Hero.

Nick McCulloch said: “We need heroes to support us in this challenge of a lifetime as we race across the Atlantic. We’d love to see as many selfies as possible on our boat and know that all those heroes are helping us to raise money for three amazing causes. People can donate as much or as little as they like.”
Brighton-based solicitors Howlett Clarke have signed up as a main sponsor and will have their name and logo on the boat for the world to see. Nick added: “I’m incredibly grateful to Howlett Clarke for supporting us and hope other businesses in Sussex and their staff will get involved. All our main sponsors will see their branding on the boat, go to exclusive team events and be involved with a promotional package to show off their involvement.”

Building professionals visit Sussex Downs College

Representatives from Chandlers Building Supplies and Porotherm (a sustainable clay block walling system) visited Sussex Downs College on Tuesday 24 February. The company led a demo for brickwork students on the Porotherm blocks – the new and more sustainable way to build houses. The event was fantastic for the students in keeping up to date with building trends and the interactive training session was a fantastic hands-on experience.

A Taste of Italy Night
Authentic Italian food was on the menu for a cultural enrichment evening held at Kings Restaurant & Bistro, on campus at Sussex Downs College last week. A guest chef and three-piece band flew in from Italy especially for the event on Thursday 26 February.
Chef Stefan Zanardi lent his expertise to Level 3 Catering students at Sussex Downs College, helping them to create an authentic Italian dining experience for guests. The night was called ‘A Taste of Italy’, and saw Kings Restaurant & Bistro transformed as live music and quality food combined to create a community festival feel. The restaurant was at full capacity with 90 guests in attendance.
