Brighton’s Arty: Alison Krog

Getting ready to Launch

The cats hate us (they’ve had to forgo 24/7 attention from the human slaves); the Rioja’s nearly run dry (we’ll be brave – and switch to Chianti); and chez Arty is carpeted in page proofs. It can only mean one thing … this year’s book is 24 hours away from going to press and the last minute panic is on. It’s been a labour of love, and we hope everyone will enjoy the sensational selection of artists who’ve taken part in Art In Brighton 2015. We couldn’t have done it without you! The book is launching on 4 April.

Don’t miss: We’ll never turn down the opportunity to feature feline-inspired artwork. So when Phil Corbett asked us to give his new show a mention, how could we refuse. ‘From Under A Rock’ looks, at first glance, like a collection of would-be cartoon video game characters. (Phil comes from a background of kids’ TV and game design, after all.) But on closer inspection, these cute images are riddled with dark undertones. Bizarre living pastries and multi-headed birds and cats struggling with online dating are just some of the subjects tackled in this exciting collection of ink works – at Brighton Rocks, Kemptown, until mid-June.

Out of town (just): It’s always a delight to buy direct from artists. And when you can do so in the beautiful surroundings of Stanmer House. Well, it’s a win-win situation. So you’d be mad to miss The Sussex Guild’s Contemporary Craft Show on 21 and 22 March. It promises a spectacular variety of work from the Guild’s designer makers – with jewellery, ceramics, glass, pewter, enamel, woodturning, furniture and textiles (including batik), patchwork, embroidery, knitwear and felting. Meet the makers, ask questions, find out how things are made and maybe even commission an individual piece? You can find out more at www.thesussexguild.co.uk
