Courtney Barnett
With a universally praised album and a packed house for her tour’s opening night, the Aussie indie star didn’t disappoint. Her set was a mix of uptempo grungey psychedelia and laid back ’70s slacker grooves that were complimented by the ever-changing animated backdrop, only ‘Small Poppies’ changing the pace with its bluesy Siouxsie sound. Her brief chats were playful as she teased the audience with ‘guess the intro’ that became ‘Avant Gardener’ which kept the moshpit moving; the narrative lyrics perfectly suited to her talking singing style. The hour ended abruptly with a pounding ‘Pedestrian At Best’, which she most definitely wasn’t.
