Music: Chip Taylor

Legendary singer songwriter Chip Taylor is back in town

Bet you didn’t know that neither The Troggs nor Jimi Hendrix wrote Wild Thing. It was, in fact, Chip Taylor, the cult american singer and songwriter. Brother of actor Jon Voigt (and one of his nieces is Angelina Jolie), he’s been writing and making music for five decades.

As well as Wild Thing he is also responsible for hits for the likes of Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, The Hollies, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Dusty Springfield and Frank Sinatra, and also wrote Angel of the Morning, a song recorded by many artists over the years, and which has featured in the charts several times. Even dancehall star Shaggy got in the act when he used the song as the basis for his hit Angel…
A pioneer of the country-rock movement of the 70s, Taylor quit music in late 70s to become a professional gambler (specialising in blackjack and horse racing), returning in 1993, and enjoying elder statesman stature within the americana, contemporary folk and singer-songwriter scenes ever since.

Highly prolific, he has released an album almost every year since 1996, has collaborated with the likes of Carrie Rodriguez, Kendal Carson and John Platania, and continues to travel the world, delving deep into his incredible repertoire of songs that are magnificent song vignettes. His latest album The Little Players Trilogy is a collection of new songs over three albums, ranging from demo recordings in his garage studio to roots rock. Coming later this year is within songs. And coming in 2015 is a book/CD, Son Of A Golf Pro, which combines the story of his experiences of trying to make it as a professional golfer, with often hilarious songs about the sport.

Golfer, gambler, musician. Is there anyone else like him?
