BREMF – Cantum pulcriorem invenire – Workshop

Brighton’s Early Music Festival 2015 started true to form with the latest academic ideas being clearly explained alongside beautiful musical examples. Professor Mark Everist introduced the conductus, a type of medieval sacred music setting mainly Latin poetry, usually for one to three voices. He suggested that the folksy rhythms of 20th century performances probably missed the point of these sophisticated, high-performance works. The Three Medieval Tenors (Rogers Covey-Crump, John Potter, Christopher O’Gorman) illustrated his theories and then each coached a third of the enthusiastic audience to sing the three-part conductus ‘Fas et nefas’. The concluding Q&A session was very rewarding.
