Asian Dub Foundation live score THX 1138

The electronica band’s live score to Star Wars director George Lucas’ first feature was a mixed bag, with the first half sounding awkward and at times arguably too restless for the melancholic, ethereal film. The dialogue was inaudible at times which spoiled the film viewing somewhat, although the band’s dynamic of reverbed and delayed guitars with flute, occasional beatboxing and drumming was accomplished. The most effective section was undoubtedly the exhilarating final chase scene with propulsive beats ramping up the tension and the momentum of the live performance also building to a fine crescendo. A fun experiment in rescoring that was more a curio for fans of the film or band, rather than a successful fusion in its own right.
