Now & Then: Andy Garth
Moving right along
When you drive along Eastern Road, keep your eyes open for the steam train coming out of the corner of the Gala bingo hall… No, I’m not mad but this week’s photos – albeit not that old – feature firstly Kemp Town Railway Station, which was situated where the industrial estate is behind the bingo, and thankfully (or not) the architects thought it would be fitting to leave a reminder!
The freight trains stopped running from the station in 1971 and the photo is from 1962.
We forget buildings that existed in our lifetime so quickly
The line had a huge tunnel (which runs under St Luke’s School) and a massive viaduct that spanned across the Lewes Road by Sainsbury’s – and the second photo shows it being demolished in 1976.
It still amazes me how we forget so quickly buildings and structures that existed in our lifetime.
I’m always looking for unusual pictures of the city and would love to hear from anyone who thinks they have some.
