Andy Garth: Now & Then

Up and under

Two more photos this week which show things that were there – but are no longer, with both having a great use.

The first is a footbridge over Eastern Road from the 1970s, which was used predominantly for Brighton College Junior school pupils to get to the main college building.

I found this when an Old Brightonian (inhabitant and college pupil) asked if I remembered the bridge, as he now lived in the USA and was looking for some quirky photos to take back with him to remind him of his youth and his love of his home town. Even living thousands of miles away… and in lovely surroundings, Brighton still has a huge place in his heart and memories.

The irony is they have just moved the pelican crossing about 50 yards up the road to almost the exact spot where the footbridge was

The second photo is only from 1984 and shows an empty, sad and derelict Black Rock outdoor swimming pool which is still over 30 years later sad, derelict and now demolished. It’s waiting for a serious plan for development to once again bring the site into use and fill the void before the Marina and after the Volks Railway terminus.

It’s a shame as so many ideas have been put forward, yet it still remains an eyesore and crying out for the council to deal with. They have mentioned moving the Brighton Centre there but time will tell.

If you have any requests for photos of something or somewhere please let me know and I will try to help.
