Auction oddities

Next week on Tuesday 27th is the next auction of all things Brighton, Hove and Sussex and with Robert Jeeves (the postcard man in Queens Road) we have tried over the last two years to sell the usual postcards, books and photos – but also the odd, strange and unusual.

Although we include rare and one-off items, nothing is silly money (unless of course two people bid against each other with neither giving in). The examples this week include an autograph of the late great music hall comedian and local resident Max Miller, who was the best paid act in the country during the 1930s. When appearing in a London Theatre he would have it written in his contract that his act would finish in time to get the last train back to Brighton from Victoria.

I’m sure there are quite a few surviving autographs but for around £10 it’s a nice thing to own and ‘there will never be another’ Max Miller.

The second photo is a great example of 1930s advertising and is a programme from the Savoy Cinema in 1935, which has loads of local adverts in it and the films that were to be shown that month. The Savoy is now the Casino and various other clubs and restaurants, which has entrances in East Street and Kings Road and is a prime candidate for the ‘look up’ saying when walking around the town – as it is a great example of 1930s design and architecture.

So if you want a bargain the auction is at St Leonard’s Church Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove, BN3 4ED. Viewing from 6.30pm, starting at 8pm.
