Andy Garth: Now & Then
Tourist art
One of my most popular sellers in the shop are the bright colourful Art Deco style posters that were produced to advertise Brighton as a place to go for a holiday, either for the day or longer.
The two examples I have shown this week have, in my view, a certain irony. Why you might ask…. Well the one to the right was produced by the council’s own tourist department which, if we still have one, don’t seem to produce the eye-catching marketing products as they did in the 1930s as I haven’t seen a Stag/Hen advert anywhere!!
It’s interesting to note that this first poster was produced for the potential French market, which shows how easily one could get to Brighton via Dieppe and Newhaven.
The top poster is one of a collection of superb iconic 1930s design produced by Southern Railways and again the irony is in the advert, frequent and cheap being the contradictions.
I don’t usually dig at these types, but in the old days things seemed to be so much more stylish, leading to pride and excitement in a trip to our beautiful city.
